Manduka eKO Lite vs Lululemon The (Big) Mat: Which One Should You Buy?

The eKO Lite is Manduka’s rubber mat cut down to carrying weight: 4 mm, 71″ × 24″, 5 pounds, $96. The Big Mat is Lululemon’s oversized mat: 5 mm, 84″ × 28″, 7.1 pounds, $128.

The Big Mat covers about 38% more floor and weighs two pounds more. The eKO Lite costs $32 less and is the one you would carry to a class. Almost nobody is genuinely torn between these two once they know where the mat is going to live.

Eighty-four by 28 against 71 by 24. The length matters if you are near six feet, and the width matters to almost everyone in a wide stance, since 24 inches is the older narrow standard and it runs out fast.

Manduka does offer the 79″ eKO Lite Long at $104, which closes most of the length gap and none of the width one. Nothing in the eKO Lite line goes wider than 24 inches.

The eKO Lite exists because the 5 mm eKO weighs seven pounds. At 5 pounds this is a mat you can carry to a studio several times a week without resenting it, which is most of its argument.

The Big Mat is 7.1 pounds and rolls into a long, thick tube that will not fit a mat bag sized for a standard mat. Lululemon sells it for the room you practice in, and that is the honest way to think about it.

The eKO Lite uses the same textured natural rubber as the 5 mm eKO, which grips from the first unroll with no break-in. GearLab did not test the Lite separately, so we will not put a number on it; what it did test is the 5 mm eKO, which scored the highest dry grip of the 19 mats in its lineup, and the surface is the same material.

The Big Mat’s polyurethane face absorbs sweat and gets tackier as a class warms up. GearLab rated the standard version of The Mat 6.5 out of 10 dry and 4.5 wet, which is mid-pack. Its textured rubber underside is offered as the drier option, and most owners pick a face in the first week and stay there.

The eKO Lite is closed-cell, which surprises people who expect a rubber mat to soak like the open-cell Jade Harmony. Sweat sits on the surface, so the texture is what keeps you steady, and the mat wipes clean in seconds because nothing gets into it.

The Lululemon takes moisture into its coating, which is better in a warm room and slower to dry afterwards. It wants a light wipe rather than a soaking. Neither is a hot yoga specialist; the Manduka GRP Adapt 2.0 measured 8.5 out of 10 wet grip, the best of anything tested.

One millimeter sounds like nothing and is the eKO Lite’s main compromise. Four millimeters of dense rubber is fine for standing work and floor sequences and thin under a kneecap on hardwood, which is exactly the trade Manduka made to get the weight down.

GearLab gave the standard version of The Mat a perfect 10 for comfort and support, level with the Manduka PRO at the top of the field. If knees are a consideration, the Lululemon is the more comfortable mat and it is not particularly close.

Manduka gives its rubber eKO line 30 days of returns and nothing after, since natural rubber is meant to wear and eventually biodegrade. New mats smell strongly of rubber for a week or two, and they are not safe with a latex allergy.

Lululemon covers mats under its Quality Promise, which has no stated term and is judged case by case. Its documented weak point is the polyurethane face, which owners report going patchy at the hands and feet after a year or two of daily practice, with no way back.

$96 against $128. Lululemon sells only through its own site and stores with little discounting. The eKO Lite is on manduka.com and Amazon, and colorway pricing moves a lot: check the eKO Lite at Amazon, since less popular colors regularly sell well below list.

Color is a rout. The eKO Lite comes in 8 colorways at last count and the Big Mat in black at last count.

Buy the eKO Lite if you carry your mat, or if $96 is the budget. It grips from day one, it is light, it comes in eight colors, and the cost is a thin 4 mm and a narrow 24 inches.
