The Big Mat is Lululemon’s oversized version of The Mat: 84″ × 28″, 5 mm of polyurethane over an FSC-certified rubber base, 7.1 pounds, $128. The PRO Travel is Manduka’s packable mat: 71″ × 24″, 2 mm of German PVC, folded flat at 2.9 pounds, $74.

These sit at opposite ends of every measurement that matters, so the comparison is short and the answer is usually obvious once you know where you practice. It comes up because both are premium mats from names people trust, and because plenty of Big Mat owners want something they can actually pack.

At 84 by 28 inches the Big Mat covers about 38% more area than the PRO Travel’s 71 by 24. That is the reason it exists: room for tall practitioners, for wide stances that would otherwise put a hand on the floor, and for home practice where you want to move around without checking the edges.

The travel mat goes the other way. Twenty-four inches is the old narrow standard and 71 inches is short for anyone near six feet. Manduka sells a 79 inch PRO Travel Long at $84, which helps with length and does nothing about width, since the travel line stops at 24 inches.

The Big Mat weighs 7.1 pounds and rolls into a long, thick tube. It is not a mat you carry to class, and Lululemon does not really pretend otherwise; it is sold for the room you practice in.

The PRO Travel folds flat rather than rolling and weighs 2.9 pounds, so it lies against the back of a carry-on or the bottom of a tote. New ones carry visible fold lines that flatten within a couple of weeks.

GearLab gave the standard version of The Mat a perfect 10 for comfort and support, level with the Manduka PRO at the top of a 19-mat field, and the Big Mat is the same construction in a larger cut. Five millimeters of rubber under a firm top is enough that knees on a hard floor are not something you think about.

The PRO Travel is 2 mm, and Manduka sells it on stability rather than padding. It is firm and stable for standing work and thin enough that kneeling on tile is close to unpadded. Over carpet or laid on a studio mat it is genuinely good, which is exactly the situation it was designed for.

The Big Mat’s polyurethane face takes moisture into the coating, so it grips better as you warm up, and the textured rubber underside is offered as the drier alternative. GearLab rated The Mat 6.5 out of 10 dry and 4.5 wet, which is mid-pack rather than exceptional, so treat it as workable in a warm room rather than a hot yoga specialist.

The PRO Travel is closed-cell PVC and absorbs nothing, so sweat pools and wet hands slide. It also ships slick and wants a few weeks of regular practice before the grip arrives, which Manduka now says resolves with use after retiring its old salt-scrub advice. Break it in at home rather than in a hotel.

The polyurethane top is the part of the Lululemon that grips and the part that goes. Owners who practice daily report the finish going patchy at the hands and feet inside a couple of years, and it does not recover. Lululemon’s Quality Promise has no stated term and is handled case by case, and the mat needs a light wipe and real drying time rather than a soaking.
