Jade Level One vs Gruper TPE 6mm: Which One Should You Buy?

The Level One is JadeYoga’s entry mat: 4 mm of open-cell natural rubber made in the USA at $66.5. It loses every row on the spec sheet and wins the one about wet hands.

The Level One’s surface has pores, so sweat goes into the mat instead of filming on top. That is why Jade mats keep gripping as a room warms up, and it is the single thing TPE cannot do at any price.

The Gruper puts a fine S-pattern on top and a corrugated grip underneath, which works well dry and stops mattering the moment your palms are damp. That is true of every closed-cell foam mat rather than a fault with this one.

The practical test is your own hands. If you have never once slipped on a mat, the Gruper’s texture is doing everything you need and the Jade’s advantage is theoretical. If you have, no amount of pattern on a foam mat is going to fix it.

What soaks into a Jade mat has to be washed out and dried properly. Jade’s one year warranty also excludes damage from harsh cleaners, so a mild spray and air drying is the routine rather than anything aggressive.

The Gruper wipes down with cold water or mild detergent and that is it. Gruper warns against washing machines, dryers and long sun exposure, and asks you to keep shoes and pets off it, because TPE tears more easily than rubber.

The Gruper is thicker and softer, so kneeling on it is more comfortable. That is a genuine advantage for floor work and part of why budget mats go to 6 mm.

Standing up, the order reverses. Soft foam compresses unevenly under one foot while dense rubber holds still, so balance poses read cleaner on the Jade. You are trading comfort for stability rather than getting both.

The Gruper is 72″ × 24″ and the Level One is 68″ × 24″. Sixty-eight inches is short even at this end of the market.

Above about five foot eight the Jade leaves your heels or head on the bare floor in savasana, and there is no longer Level One. For a tall beginner that alone can settle the page regardless of grip.

TPE is the least durable of the common mat materials. It compresses, dents and tears where hands and feet land, typically inside one to two years of daily use and faster in sunlight. Gruper publishes no warranty at all, so the Amazon return window is your protection.

The Level One should run several years with reasonable care, backed by one year of coverage that excludes sun damage and harsh cleaners. That lifespan gap is a real part of the $38.

Neither warranty covers a surface worn thin by normal use, which is how both of these end. Read the coverage as a defect policy and the material as the actual lifespan estimate, because that is what it is.

2.6 pounds against 4. The Gruper is the easier carry, and it includes a strap and a storage bag that Jade does not, worth a few dollars on their own.

Four pounds is not heavy for a rubber mat. For comparison, the 5 mm Manduka eKO runs 7 pounds and the Manduka PRO 7.5, so the Level One is at the light end of what real rubber weighs.

Jade calls its mats 99 percent latex free, which is not the same as latex free, and does not recommend them for latex allergies. TPE contains no latex and no PVC, so the Gruper is the safe option there.

The Level One is made in the USA, which is unusual at any price and close to unheard of at $66.50. Jade also plants a tree for every mat sold and has passed two million, which is a program rather than a certification but a real one.

The Level One sells only on jadeyoga.com in Classic Blue and Classic Purple. There is no Amazon listing, no marketplace price, and effectively no color choice.

The Gruper comes in eight colorways, most of them two-tone, and hovers around $27.99. It also comes in an 8 mm version at 3.1 pounds if you want more cushioning from the same listing.

Get the Gruper if you are new, practice a couple of times a week in a cool room, or want the most usable mat for the least money. Longer, thicker, lighter, with the accessories included, and nobody should feel underequipped on it.
