Amazon Basics 1/4 Inch TPE vs Gruper TPE 6mm: Which One Should You Buy?
Same material, same 6 mm thickness, same 24 inch width, and less than $2 apart at list. The Gruper is the established Amazon favorite, with about 10,650 ratings and a storage bag included. The Amazon Basics has far fewer reviews but a slightly longer, lighter mat and a one year warranty that Gruper doesn't offer.

The quick answer
On the floor these two should feel much alike: 6 mm of springy, closed-cell TPE that is comfortable with dry hands and slick once you sweat. The Gruper brings ten times the ratings, a higher sales rank, a storage bag, eight colorways and an 8 mm option. The Amazon Basics brings a one year warranty, an extra inch and a half of length, a lighter mat and a slightly lower list price.
If you want the proven favorite, get the Gruper. If you want a warranty behind a budget mat, get the Amazon Basics, because Gruper offers no coverage whatsoever.

Two 6 mm TPE mats, a dollar and change apart
Same material, same 6 mm thickness, same 24 inch width, and list prices of $26.36 and $27.99. Search Amazon for a cheap TPE yoga mat and these two are likely near the top, and their spec sheets barely separate them.
The Gruper is by far the more established of the two. It sits around #5 on Amazon’s yoga mat best seller list with about 10,650 ratings, while the Amazon Basics is around #21 with about 980. The Amazon Basics answers with a one year warranty, which Gruper doesn’t offer at all. Most of this decision comes down to those two facts and a few small ones.
Where the numbers differ
Length first. The Amazon Basics is 73.6″ and the Gruper 72″, a little over an inch and a half in the Amazon mat’s favor. That won’t change who fits. A six-footer lying flat fills either one end to end, and anyone taller runs out of mat on both.
Weight is 2 pounds against 2.6. Both are easy to carry all day, and a little over half a pound won’t register on a walk to class. The Gruper also comes in an 8 mm version at 3.1 pounds; the Amazon Basics is sold in 6 mm only.
How the Gruper is put together
The Gruper is two layers of TPE bonded into one sheet. The upper face carries a small S-shaped pattern and the underside is ridged, and Gruper says the double layer resists tearing and deformation. Gruper pitches the fine pattern as grip for your hands and feet and the ridged side as the part that holds a smooth floor.
Amazon describes its own mat as having a non-slip surface and spring-back elasticity, and says nothing about layers. Whether the Gruper’s construction adds years of life is something nobody has tested, so treat the tear resistance as Gruper’s claim rather than a proven advantage.
Feel and cushion
Six millimeters of TPE is soft and springy. It sinks a little under a knee and pushes back, which is pleasant on a hard floor and a bit bouncy in balance poses. Nothing on either listing points to a meaningful difference in firmness, and neither mat has been through GearLab’s testing or any other review we would cite.
If you want more padding, the Gruper’s 8 mm version is the only step up in either line. If you want a steadier surface for standing work, look at PVC or rubber instead, since TPE from any brand keeps some of that spring.
Grip, sweat and slippery floors
Both rely on a pressed texture over closed-cell foam, and that works with dry hands. Sweat can’t soak into TPE, so once your palms get damp it collects on the surface and both mats turn slick. A hand towel helps in a warm room. For heated classes, look at a different kind of mat altogether.
On polished wood, any mat this light can creep a little during a quick flow, simply because there is so little weight pinning it down. That applies to both of these, whatever the underside texture looks like.
Ten times the reviews behind the Gruper
The Gruper holds 4.4 stars from about 10,650 ratings. The Amazon Basics holds 4.6 from about 980. The higher average belongs to the much smaller pool, and that is worth keeping in mind before reading it as the better mat.
A pool the size of the Gruper’s reflects a lot of use across colors and production runs, and it moves slowly. One under a thousand can still shift as more owners weigh in, so the Amazon Basics score is less settled than it looks.
Neither number tells you how the mat holds up after a year of daily practice. For that, the warranty terms are a better guide, and they point the other way.
One year of coverage against none
Amazon Basics covers its TPE mat for one year. Gruper doesn’t publish a warranty, so after Amazon’s normal return window closes you are on your own. With mats this cheap the sum at risk is small, but it is the clearest objective difference between the two, and it favors the Amazon Basics.
Gruper’s care instructions are worth following on either mat: hand clean only with cold water and a gentle soap, let it dry lying flat, never put it through a washing machine or dryer, and limit time in direct sun. Gruper also warns that shoes and pets’ paws can tear the mat, and TPE in general doesn’t like heat, so a hot car is a bad place to store either.
Strap, bag and colors
Both come with a carrying strap. The Gruper listing adds a storage bag, which keeps the mat clean in a backpack or a hall closet and saves you buying one separately.
For looks, Gruper offers eight colorways at last count, most of them two-tone. The Amazon Basics comes in 4 colorways at last count. If color matters to you at all, the Gruper gives you more to choose from.
Price and where to buy
Both are sold only on Amazon, and a $1.63 list gap is easily erased by a colorway on sale, so compare them on the same day. Check the Amazon Basics TPE at Amazon and the Gruper at Amazon before you order.
If neither feels right, our Gaiam Premium 6mm vs Gruper page covers a PVC option with a GearLab score behind it, and Amazon Basics TPE vs IUGA shows what about $40 more buys in grip.
Bottom line
Get the Gruper if you want the mat with the long track record, more colors, a storage bag in the box, or the option of 8 mm. It is the one most buyers choose, and more than ten thousand ratings is a meaningful signal at this price.
Pick the Amazon Basics if a year of warranty cover, a slightly longer and lighter mat, or the lower list price matters more. On the mat itself we wouldn’t expect you to notice much difference, so let the warranty and the extras decide.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which is better, the Gruper or the Amazon Basics TPE mat?
- They are close enough on the mat itself that the extras decide it. Both are 6 mm TPE, 24 inches wide and under $28 at list. The Gruper has about 10,650 ratings, ranks around #5 in Amazon's yoga mat category and includes a storage bag. The Amazon Basics has about 980 ratings but comes with a one year warranty, is slightly longer at 73.6 inches and slightly lighter at 2 pounds. Neither has been independently tested.
- Does the Gruper yoga mat have a warranty?
- Gruper doesn't publish one. Once Amazon's standard return window closes, you have no recourse from the brand. The Amazon Basics TPE mat comes with a one year warranty, which is the clearest objective difference between the two.
- Are TPE yoga mats good for hot yoga?
- Not really. TPE is closed-cell, so sweat can't soak in and collects on the surface, and both of these mats get slippery once your hands are damp. A towel over the mat helps in a warm room. For heated classes, a mat with an absorbent polyurethane top or natural rubber is a better match.
- Is 6 mm of TPE enough for bad knees?
- On carpet it is enough for most people, and on a hard floor it is noticeably softer than a thin 4 mm mat because TPE compresses and springs back. On tile or concrete, long kneeling holds can still reach the floor. If you need more, Gruper sells an 8 mm version that weighs 3.1 pounds; the Amazon Basics is 6 mm only.
- Does the Gruper come with a bag?
- Yes. Gruper's Amazon listing includes both a carrying strap and a storage bag. The Amazon Basics TPE mat comes with a carrying strap only.
- Can you leave a TPE mat in a hot car?
- It's best not to. Gruper's care instructions warn against long sun exposure, and TPE mats in general are warned against heat. Store either mat rolled, indoors and out of direct sun. Gruper also says to clean with a damp cloth and cold water or mild detergent, dry the mat flat, and keep it out of the washing machine and dryer.
