42 Birds The Robin vs Lululemon The (Big) Mat: Which One Should You Buy?

The 42 Birds Robin pairs a 5 mm cork top with a latex-free foam base. It measures 72″ × 26″, weighs 1.9 pounds and costs $92. Lululemon’s The (Big) Mat is 5 mm thick, a polyurethane top on FSC-certified natural rubber, at 84″ × 28″, 7.1 pounds and $128.

The Big Mat weighs nearly four times as much and costs $36 more. Most people shopping it want the length, though, and 42 Birds sells a long Robin that makes this a much closer contest than the standard sizes suggest.

The Extra Long Robin measures 85″ × 26″, weighs 2.5 pounds and costs $108; 42 Birds pitches it at taller yogis. Against the Big Mat it is an inch longer, two inches narrower, $20 cheaper and 4.6 pounds lighter. We don’t have a page for it, but 42birds.com sells it.

By area the Big Mat still leads, 2,352 square inches to 2,210, and all of that comes from width. If broad shoulders or wide stances are the problem, the extra two inches favor the Lululemon. If the problem is running out of mat at the top or bottom, the long Robin solves it at a third of the weight.

The standard Robin covers 1,872 square inches, so the Big Mat gives you about 26% more. Its 72 inches fits most people under six feet.

The only Lululemon in GearLab’s roundup is the smaller The Mat, which ranked fourth of 19 at 81 out of 100 and took Best Mat for Mixed Fitness Routines. Those scores describe the Big Mat’s surface too, since the build is the same, but GearLab never tested the big one.

Nobody independent has tested the Robin. What exists is 42 Birds’ own copy and the reviews on its store, 212 of them with 181 at five stars. That is a friendly sample, being the brand’s own store.

According to 42 Birds, moisture makes cork grip better, hence its line that the Robin is ideal for sweaty or hot yoga, and a light mist of water adds grip. One reviewer says it worked right out of the box, with no awkward break-in phase. Another likes it overall but says it slips and isn’t suited to hot yoga.

One Robin buyer came from the standard The Mat 5mm, which they kept slipping on in hot classes, and reports more grip from the cork as they sweat. That is one owner on the brand’s store. GearLab’s table gives the standard The Mat 6.5 dry and 4.5 wet, though its write-up says testers had excellent traction even with the mat soaking wet.

The mechanics differ. Lululemon’s top absorbs sweat into the surface; cork leaves it on top, which helps until it starts to pool. Heavy sweaters in a heated room should bring a towel for either.

The standard The Mat got a perfect 10 for comfort and support in GearLab’s test, which described it as steady in inversions while still easy on the joints. GearLab also listed The Mat among the mats that grip the floor notably well.

The Robin’s 5 mm is firm cork over foam. One owner found its texture softer than expected, in a good way, and another reports it stays in place through class. 42 Birds calls the foam base slip resistant, but on polished wood a 1.9 pound mat has far less mass keeping it in place than a 7.1 pound one.

42 Birds says both the standard and Extra Long Robin roll to about 4″ across. Several owners mention a strap arriving with the mat, though 42 Birds’ specs don’t list one. Either is an easy carry to a studio.

GearLab’s scale put the standard The Mat at 5.9 pounds, which it called a bit above average. The Big Mat is 7.1 pounds and seven feet of roll, so plan on it staying home.

42 Birds describes the Robin’s foam base as free of PVC, plasticizers and latex. The Big Mat’s natural rubber base contains latex, and GearLab lists that as a con for the standard mat, so an allergy points to the Robin.

Care per 42 Birds is a damp-cloth wipe after each session, no harsh cleaners, a full air dry before it’s rolled, and storage rolled cork side out. According to the brand, cork naturally fends off mold, mildew and odor. One owner adds that because the cork isn’t super sticky, their dog’s stray hairs don’t cling to it the way they did to their previous mat.

The Lululemon is the higher-maintenance mat. GearLab says its top absorbs oils and dirt as well as sweat, stains very easily in light colors and wants a deep clean now and then. Black helps with the stains.

Under 42 Birds’ refund policy, which it calls a happiness guarantee, you get 30 days and free returns even after sweating on the mat. That lets the cork prove itself in your own classes. There is no warranty after that month, and no long-term independent test of the Robin.

Lululemon backs the Big Mat with its Quality Promise, which has no fixed term. GearLab reports that The Mat typically lasts past five years, with moderate wear and some grip loss where hands and feet land.

The Robin is $92 from 42birds.com. It comes only in natural cork. Amazon’s Robin listing is stale: it describes a 72″ × 24″ mat at 2.5 pounds and has 3.9 stars from 36 ratings, so buy from 42 Birds. The Big Mat is $128 from lululemon.com and its stores, not from the resellers who list Lululemon mats on Amazon.

The Robin makes more sense if the mat travels with you, if it has to be latex-free, or if you’d like 30 days to try cork in sweaty classes with a used-mat return. If length is the draw, the Extra Long Robin gives you 85 inches at 2.5 pounds for $20 less than the Big Mat. Just know nobody independent has tested its grip.

Buy the Big Mat if it will stay home, you want the extra width, and you trust GearLab’s results for the standard size: top-tier cushion, a reversible surface and years of use. It will need a proper clean every so often.
