Manduka X vs Jade Travel: Which One Should You Buy?

The Manduka X is $72 and 3.4 pounds. The Jade Travel is $79.95 and 3 pounds. Price and portability are close enough that neither is going to decide this, which leaves the surfaces, and those are not close at all.

The X is 5 mm of TPE, textured on both faces, sold by Manduka as a hybrid fitness mat for people who lift and jump as well as flow. The Jade Travel is 3.2 mm of USA-made natural rubber that folds flat and grips the way Jade’s bigger mats do.

Jade’s open-cell rubber takes on light sweat rather than letting it bead on the surface, so traction holds as a class warms up, and it is tacky from the first minute with no break-in. OutdoorGearLab has not tested this exact mat, but it rated Jade’s other rubber mats 9 and 9.5 out of 10 for dry grip, and the Travel is the same material in a thinner cut.

The X’s textured TPE is fine with dry hands and lets go sooner once your palms are damp. That is true of TPE across the category rather than a fault specific to Manduka, and it is the trade you accept for a latex-safe surface that is very hard to damage.

If this mat is for yoga and only yoga, the Jade is the better surface and it costs $7.95 more.

5 mm against 3.2. On tile or concrete, that shows up under kneecaps and under the heels of your hands, and the X is clearly the kinder of the two. On a wood floor or over carpet the difference shrinks a lot.

The other side of it is that thinner reads steadier. The Jade gives a crisper connection to the floor in standing balances, and it can fold properly, which a 5 mm mat cannot. Neither one is trying to be a cushioned mat, and neither pretends otherwise.

The Jade Travel is built to fold flat into a suitcase. That is the job it was designed for, and at 3 pounds it does it without eating your baggage allowance. Fold lines relax within a session or two.

The X rolls. It does not fold well and it does not want to, and at 3.4 pounds it is a normal mat to sling over a shoulder rather than something you pack around clothes.

If air travel is the reason you are shopping, that settles it, and if you want to go thinner still, the Jade Voyager is the same rubber at 1.6 mm.

Take abuse. Dense TPE handles shoes, dumbbells, and jumping without denting or tearing, and it is textured on both sides so it works either way up. If your week is yoga plus strength work plus the occasional HIIT video, all on the same mat in the same corner of a room, the X is designed for exactly that.

The Jade Travel is thin natural rubber. It is not the mat to put a kettlebell on, and dragging it around a garage gym will finish it quickly.

Manduka’s cheaper TPE mat, the Begin, is the cheaper take on the same idea, with a printed center line and a shorter life, if the X is more mat than you need.

The X is TPE with no natural rubber in it, so it is safe with a latex allergy. The Jade Travel is tapped tree rubber, and Jade states its mats are 99% latex free rather than latex free, which means it is not safe with a genuine allergy.

No amount of grip advantage changes that, and it is the one factor on this page that overrides everything else.

The Jade wants more. Open-cell rubber absorbs sweat into the mat rather than holding it on the surface, so it needs washing more regularly with water or a very diluted mild soap, and rubber has to stay out of hot cars and direct sun or it degrades.

The X’s sealed TPE wipes clean, tolerates neglect, and does not mind living in a car trunk. If low maintenance genuinely matters to you, that is worth real money.

Coverage runs the other way. Jade writes a one year warranty on the Travel, excluding sun damage and harsh cleaners. Manduka gives the X a 30 day return window and nothing else.

The Jade Travel comes in three colorways and a 74″ Long version, and sells on Amazon as well as jadeyoga.com. Jade also plants a tree for every mat sold, past two million by its own count, which is a program rather than a certification but a real one.

Get the Jade Travel if this mat is for yoga. Better grip, USA-made rubber, a written warranty, and it folds. The costs are less cushion, more cleaning, and no good if latex is a problem.

Get the Manduka X if the same mat also has to survive weights, a gym floor, or a household that treats it carelessly. It is thicker, tougher, latex-safe, and $7.95 cheaper, and for pure yoga it is the lesser surface.
