Manduka PRO Squared vs PROlite Long & Wide: Which One Should You Buy?

The PROlite Long & Wide is Manduka’s modest answer: 79″ × 30″, 7 pounds, $144, six inches wider than a standard mat and still something you can roll up and put in a cupboard. The PRO Squared is the immodest one: 78″ × 78″, 26 pounds, $350, a permanent home practice floor.

Same German PVC, same fabric-like surface, same OEKO-TEX certification, same lifetime guarantee. The decision is about scale, not quality, and specifically about whether the mat gets put away.

Thirty inches sounds like a small upgrade over the standard 24, and it is not. Hands land on the mat in wide-legged poses, sprawled floor work stays on the surface, and broad shoulders stop hanging over the edge. For one person, 30 inches is usually enough to end the complaint that sent them shopping.

The Squared is a different proposition: 6,084 square inches against 2,370, with no front, no back, and no edges to respect. Sun salutations can face any wall, and two adults can practice at once with real separation between them. That is what the extra $206 is for, and it is not a nicer version of the PROlite’s trick.

At 7 pounds the PROlite Long & Wide rolls up, stores in a closet, and fits in a car. It is not a commuter mat, because a 30 inch mat rolls fatter than most mat bags and studio cubbies will take, but it can be tidied away, taken to a friend’s house, or carried out to a garden.

The Squared cannot do any of that. Twenty-six pounds of PVC in a 78 inch square gets unrolled once. If you live somewhere the mat has to share a room with normal life, the decision is made for you no matter how appealing the square is.

The PROlite Long & Wide needs a clear rectangle about 6 feet 7 inches by 2 feet 6 inches while you practice, and nothing at all when you are done. The Squared needs a clear square about six and a half feet on a side, permanently, plus room to walk around it.

Tape the Squared’s footprint out on your floor and live with it for a day before spending $350. It takes over more of a room than the number suggests, and on thick plush carpet a dense mat also picks up a slightly springy feel in standing poses, which is the carpet moving rather than the mat.

The gap shows up under knees and forearms on a hard floor over a long session. On carpet, or in a practice that is mostly standing, it is a spec-sheet difference rather than a felt one.

Neither absorbs sweat. Closed-cell PVC keeps the mats clean and easy to wipe down, and it also means wet palms slide. For heated practice the answer in Manduka’s range is the GRP Adapt 2.0, whose polyurethane top grips harder as it gets wet.
