Manduka PRO Squared vs PROlite: Which One Should You Buy?

These two come out of the same German factory, from the same dense PVC, with the same fabric-like top, the same OEKO-TEX certification, and the same lifetime guarantee. Nothing about quality separates them. What separates them is 4,380 square inches and $238.

The PRO Squared is a 78 inch square that weighs 26 pounds and costs $350. It is a home practice floor. The PROlite is a 71″ × 24″ mat that weighs 4.6 pounds and costs $112. It is a mat you sling over your shoulder. If your mat leaves the house, this page is already over.

The PROlite exists because the PRO is heavy. At 4.6 pounds it rolls to a normal diameter, fits mat bags and studio cubbies, and can be carried on a bike or a train without becoming the main event of your commute. For people who go to classes, that is the whole ballgame, and it is why the PROlite outsells the mats above it.

The Squared cannot be carried in any meaningful sense. Twenty-six pounds of 6 mm PVC in a 78 inch square rolls into something you move with both arms and set down carefully. It is designed to be unrolled once and left there, and it does not pretend otherwise.

A clear square about six and a half feet on a side, plus room to walk around it. That is most of a home office, a real share of a bedroom, or a corner of a garage gym given over permanently to yoga. Put painter’s tape on the floor for a day before you spend $350; people are surprised by the footprint more often than by the price.

What you get for it is a surface with no front and no back. A rectangular mat orients your practice; a 78 inch square lets sun salutations face any wall and never runs out of mat in any direction. Two adults can practice at once, each with more width than a standard mat and real separation between them. Nothing else Manduka makes does that.

The Squared carries about 28% more cushion than the PROlite, and both are dense enough to feel firm rather than soft. In standing poses you will not notice. Kneeling, or on your forearms, on tile or concrete, you will: the extra 1.3 mm is the difference between comfortable and fine.

This is the same trade the PROlite makes against every PRO. It is a slightly thinner mat that gives up a little support to become a mat you can actually carry. Most people who practice in studios take that deal happily.

The PROlite is 24 inches wide, the standard yoga width, and two inches narrower than the PRO line. Broad-shouldered practitioners notice; wide-legged poses and sprawled floor work do run off the edges. It is not a flaw so much as the shape of the category.

The Squared removes the constraint entirely, which is a strange thing to get used to. There is nothing to aim at, no edge to respect, and props can sit beside you instead of on the floor. Whether that is worth $238 depends entirely on whether you are practicing alone in a room you control.

The most common complaint about the PRO family applies to both mats here: they are slippery when new. The closed-cell surface breaks in over a few weeks of regular practice. Manduka has retired the salt scrub it used to recommend and now says plainly that the slickness resolves with use, and owners bear that out.

Once broken in, both grip well dry and keep improving. Neither absorbs sweat, so heated classes mean a towel on either, and heavy sweaters are better served by the GRP Adapt 2.0, whose polyurethane top is designed to grip when wet.

Dense closed-cell PVC is about the most durable mat material there is. GearLab’s testers keep finding instructors’ PRO-family mats five to twenty years old and still in near-mint condition, and a mat that lives flat in a home studio has an easier life than one that gets rolled and hauled twice a week.

Buy the PROlite if you go to classes, or if your mat needs to be put away between sessions. You get the same PVC, the same surface, and the same lifetime guarantee for $238 less, and you give up 1.3 mm of cushion that most practitioners never miss.

Buy the PRO Squared if you have a room to give it and, ideally, someone to practice in it with you. As a home studio floor it has no substitute in the Manduka line. For one person, on a normal floor, it is a lot of mat you will never stand on.
