Manduka PRO Long vs Hugger Mugger Earth Elements 5mm: Which One Should You Buy?

The Manduka PRO Long is an 85-inch mat built from dense PVC. The Hugger Mugger Earth Elements is a standard-size TPE mat that weighs little more than a quarter as much. Both provide at least 5mm of cushioning, but they feel and travel very differently.

We would choose the PRO Long for tall practitioners, stable support and long-term home use. The Earth Elements makes more sense for a beginner, a gentle practice or anyone who carries a mat to class. It saves $81 and 7.1 pounds, although it comes without Manduka’s long warranty coverage.

The PRO Long measures 85″ × 26″. The Earth Elements is 72″ × 24″. Thirteen extra inches keep a tall person on the Manduka in savasana, while the added two inches of width provide more room for hands and feet. It is one of the more comfortable footprints for a dedicated home practice area.

A 72″ × 24″ mat is easier to fit into a small room or a busy class, and it is long enough for many practitioners. People under six feet may not benefit much from the PRO Long’s larger outline. The 71-inch Manduka PRO offers the same dense construction without paying for unused floor space.

Manduka’s 6mm PVC has a firm, planted feel. It protects knees without letting feet sink deeply during standing balances. Hugger Mugger uses 5mm of TPE, which feels softer and more compressible. That can be comfortable in restorative poses, floor work and a beginner class.

People who dislike hard mats may prefer the Earth Elements at first touch. For demanding balance work or repeated transitions, we favor the PRO Long because its denser platform moves less under pressure. Neither mat is extremely thick, so both remain more suitable for yoga than half-inch exercise foam.

Hugger Mugger describes the Earth Elements as naturally grippy and tells owners to wash it before the first use to improve traction. Its textured TPE is intended for ordinary dry practice. Because the material is closed-cell, it does not absorb sweat like a polyurethane hot-yoga surface.

The PRO Long also has a closed-cell surface, and new mats often need time before the fabric-like finish feels secure. Manduka’s current recommendation is regular use. With either mat, a towel is sensible once enough sweat collects on top. We would not choose between them for hot yoga alone; dedicated absorbent mats handle that setting better.

The Earth Elements weighs 2.4 pounds. It is easy to take on a walk, public transit or a trip to the studio. The PRO Long weighs 9.5 pounds and rolls into a larger 26-inch package. It is transportable, but few people will enjoy making it a daily commute.

That weight also helps the Manduka stay settled on the floor, so it is useful in a permanent practice space. The Hugger Mugger’s lighter construction is a better match for people who put the mat away after each session. You can feel the difference before class even starts.

Manduka makes the PRO Long in Germany from latex-free PVC, with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. Hugger Mugger lists the Earth Elements as latex-free, recyclable TPE made in Taiwan. The current product description also mentions natural rubber, but its detailed product specifications, collection filter and latex-free labeling identify TPE. We rely on those specific fields.

Wipe the Manduka with warm water or a compatible mat cleaner and roll it top side out after drying. Hugger Mugger suggests mat wash or a weak solution of mild dish soap and water, followed by complete air drying. Keep the Earth Elements away from direct sun and hot cars because its TPE is photo-degradable.

Manduka’s lifetime guarantee covers roughly ten years of regular use and one replacement, with proof of purchase from an authorized seller. Dense PVC also has a long reputation for wear, though any mat can be damaged by poor storage or unsuitable cleaners.

Hugger Mugger does not publish a universal long-term warranty for this mat. Its policy allows unused products bought direct to be returned or exchanged within 30 days of shipment. That is enough time to inspect color, dimensions and visible defects, but not to evaluate wear through months of practice.

The PRO Long lists for $164; the Earth Elements is $83. Manduka offered five PRO Long colors when we checked. Hugger Mugger had four Earth Elements colors, all available at the same price. The lower price is attractive for a first mat, provided the standard dimensions and softer TPE suit you.

Get the PRO Long if you are tall, want a firm base for balance and expect the mat to stay in one room. Its dense cushioning and lifetime guarantee help justify the higher cost. Its initial grip takes patience, and 9.5 pounds is inconvenient away from home.

Get the Earth Elements if you want soft cushioning, a manageable carry and a lower price. It is a sensible general-use mat for dry classes and gentler practice. The standard 72″ × 24″ surface and limited return coverage are the compromises, so tall practitioners and durability-focused buyers should stay with Manduka.
