Manduka Begin vs Jade Travel: Which One Should You Buy?

The Begin is Manduka’s entry mat: 5 mm of soft TPE, latex free, with a centre alignment stripe and 10 colorways at last count, at $62.

The Jade Travel is 3.2 mm of open-cell natural rubber that folds into a bag, made in the USA, at $79.95. One is built to teach you the shapes and one is built to travel and still grip.

The Travel is open-cell natural rubber, so moisture soaks into the material rather than beading on top of it. That is the mechanism behind Jade’s twenty-year reputation, and it is the same rubber that goes into the Harmony.

The Begin is closed-cell TPE. Sweat has nowhere to go, so it sits on the surface and your hands eventually slide. In a cool room doing gentle work you may never reach that point; in a warm class you will, and a towel becomes part of the kit.

The Begin is the softer and thicker mat, and for a beginner that is not a small thing. Early practice involves a lot of time on knees and forearms while you build the strength that makes a thinner mat comfortable.

The Travel keeps about twice the material of Jade’s own Voyager at 1.6 mm, which makes it genuinely usable on a hard floor rather than merely survivable. On tile, a long kneeling sequence will still find you.

The Jade Travel folds into a suitcase and the crease marks settle with use. That is the design brief and it is executed well: real rubber grip in something that packs, which most travel mats give up on.

The Begin rolls. Soft TPE creases and the creases do not fully recover, so folding it is not an option. At 2.5 pounds it is light enough to carry anywhere a rolled mat fits, which is most places but not inside luggage.

Both are 68″ × 24″, which is the small end of standard and short for anyone near six feet. Jade makes a 74″ Travel at $93.75; Manduka sells the Begin in one size.

The Begin is 2.5 pounds and the Travel 3, so weight is not the deciding factor. Both are easy carries, and only one of them disappears into a bag.

The Jade has the advantage that thin rubber gives you a very direct read on the ground. You feel where your weight is, which is useful in standing work and unforgiving in kneeling work. It also has enough mass at 3 pounds to stay put on polished boards, which the thinner packable mats in Jade’s range do not always manage.

The Begin sits between you and the floor a little more. Soft TPE takes the edge off a hard surface, and it compresses slightly under a standing foot, so balances feel marginally less precise. Neither effect is dramatic; both are the sort of thing you notice in the first week and stop thinking about afterwards.

The alignment stripe runs the length of the mat, so you can check whether your feet, hands and hips are square without a mirror or a teacher. It is part of the surface rather than a print that wears off.

When you are learning the shapes that is a genuine help, and it is what the Begin is for. The Jade Travel is a plain mat, which is what most people want once they no longer need the reference.

The Jade absorbs, so the sweat you leave on it has to come back out. Mild soap and a damp cloth after sweaty sessions is not optional if you practice often, and Jade’s one-year warranty excludes harsh cleaners and sun damage.

The Begin wipes dry in seconds because nothing soaks in. Its long-term problem is different: soft TPE takes compression set, so it gradually dents where you kneel. Manduka gives it 30 day returns and nothing after.

TPE contains no natural latex, which makes the Begin a safe option with an allergy. The Jade Travel is natural tree rubber, and Jade describes its mats as 99% latex free rather than latex free, so it is not suitable for a genuine allergy.

The $17.95 buys grip and the ability to fold. If you never travel with a mat and you practice in a cool room, it buys you very little, and the Begin is the more comfortable surface for learning on.

Get the Begin if you are new to yoga, if you want 5 mm of cushion and a centre line to check yourself against, or if latex is a problem. It is cheaper and it is the easier mat to learn on.

Get the Jade Travel if the mat has to fold, or if you sweat enough that closed-cell TPE will not hold you. It is USA-made rubber with real traction and enough material to practice on properly, which is a rare combination in a mat that packs.
