Gaiam Essentials 6mm vs Gaiam Essentials Fitness Mat 10mm: Which One Should You Buy?
Gaiam uses the Essentials name on both of these, and they are not two sizes of one mat. The Essentials 6mm is a PVC yoga mat with a sticky texture on both faces. The Essentials Fitness Mat is a 10 mm NBR exercise mat that Gaiam sells for ab work, toning and stretching. Both are 72 inches long, both come with a sling, and the list prices are $2.85 apart, so the choice comes down to what you do on the floor.

The quick answer
The 6mm is 72 by 24 inches, 3.5 pounds, and lists for about $22. The Fitness mat is 72 by 23.6 inches, about 2.8 pounds by our figures, and lists for $24.98. Neither has been independently tested. Amazon's review summary praises the Fitness mat for thickness and comfort and faults it on stability, durability and smell; the 6mm draws praise for build and value and milder grumbles about grip and thinness.
If the mat is for yoga with standing poses, get the Essentials 6mm. If the mat is for core work, stretching, physio or knees that hurt on anything thinner, get the Essentials Fitness Mat.

Same name, two different mats
Gaiam puts the word Essentials on its cheapest products, and two of them land in the same search. The Essentials 6mm is a 6 mm PVC yoga mat with a sticky texture on both faces. The Essentials Fitness Mat is a 10 mm NBR exercise mat with molded ridges. They share a length, a sling and a guarantee, and $2.85 separates their list prices.
So the decision is what you do on the floor. Gaiam pitches the Fitness mat for ab work, toning and stretching. The 6mm is the one it calls a yoga mat without qualification, and the one we would hand to someone who is going to stand on it.
The 6mm is the yoga mat
Gaiam’s own page for the Fitness mat never mentions yoga. Its Amazon listing does: the title calls it a thick yoga mat and the bullets add low-impact yoga and Pilates to the floor-exercise pitch. Amazon’s review summary tallies suitability for yoga at 257 positive mentions against 92 negative.
GearLab recommends 3 to 5 mm for most practice unless you need extra cushion. Six millimeters of PVC sits just past that range. Ten millimeters of softer foam is double it. If your sessions include standing poses, the 6mm is the mat built for them.
Thickness complaints run both ways
Amazon’s review summary for the 6mm counts thickness at 131 positive mentions against 72 negative, and the negative ones say it is not as thick as expected. Six millimeters of soft PVC still leaves a kneecap feeling a tile floor in a long hold.
The Fitness mat draws the opposite note. Thickness runs 1,112 positive to 171 and comfort 1,017 to 83, while stability splits 227 positive against 365 negative, with owners divided on whether it stays put. The foam that helps a knee is the same foam that moves under a standing heel.
If you are shopping because a thin mat hurt your knees, the 10 mm fixes that and the 6mm will not. If you are shopping because a thick mat felt like standing on a mattress, reverse it.
Grip: sticky finish against ridges
The 6mm uses Gaiam’s textured sticky finish, the same surface class as the Gaiam Premium 6mm, which GearLab scored 6 out of 10 dry and 4 wet. The Essentials itself is untested, and its owners are lukewarm: Amazon’s review summary has grip at 95 positive mentions against 112 negative. In a dry room it holds; with damp palms it does not.
The Fitness mat grips mechanically, through ridges in the foam, and Gaiam scopes the claim to hard floors during dry workouts. Both materials are closed-cell, so neither belongs in a heated class without a towel. Our Premium vs Essentials Fitness page puts the Fitness mat against the Gaiam that GearLab did score.
Same length, a sling on each
Both are 72 inches long. The 6mm is 24 inches wide and the Fitness mat 23.6, which makes it the narrowest mat we cover, though 0.4 inches is not something you will feel.
The 6mm weighs 3.5 pounds. The Fitness mat is about 2.8 by our figures, and Amazon’s details table says lighter still, since Gaiam publishes no weight. Both ship with a cinch strap; the 10 mm roll is the fatter one.
How each foam gives out
Soft PVC fails slowly. The 6mm packs down under hands and knees over a couple of years and its sticky texture wears smooth where palms land. Owners rate its build well: Amazon’s review summary has quality at 495 positive mentions against 89 negative.
NBR fails faster and more visibly. Durability is the worst line in the Fitness mat’s summary at 285 positive against 661 negative, with some owners reporting it tears easily. Soft foam dents for good under a knee and the edges go first, and it is the mat you will replace sooner.
The smell complaints are lopsided
Both arrive smelling of the factory. Gaiam asks you to unroll the 6mm and air it for two to three days. For the Fitness mat it calls the NBR low-odor and says any smell fades in 24 to 48 hours.
Owners disagree about the second claim. Amazon’s review summary has odor at 32 positive mentions against 59 negative on the 6mm, and 111 against 355 on the Fitness mat, with some calling it an awful smell. Give the thicker mat the longer airing. The 6mm is latex-free and 6P-free; Gaiam makes no latex statement for the Fitness mat, though NBR is synthetic rather than natural latex.
One guarantee, terms published for neither
Gaiam advertises a lifetime guarantee on both mats and we could not find the terms for either. Read it as cover for a manufacturing defect rather than for foam that has flattened or an edge that has torn in year two. Gaiam’s 30-day returns apply only to unopened orders from gaiam.com.
On paper that is a tie. It matters more on the mat that tears, and whether a torn edge counts as a defect is a conversation with Gaiam rather than a promise.
Price, colors and the two-length trap
The 6mm lists for $22.13 and the Fitness mat for $24.98. Check the current Essentials 6mm price at Amazon, and check the Fitness mat at Amazon or direct from gaiam.com.
We link the 6mm on Amazon only. Gaiam’s own site sells a different Essentials yoga mat at 68 by 24 inches for $19.98 without the sling, under the same name. The 72 inch version with the sling is the one this page describes.
The 6mm comes in seven plain colors; the Fitness mat in 11. Both average 4.6 stars on Amazon, the Fitness mat across about 46,800 ratings and the 6mm across roughly 15,000.
Bottom line
Get the Gaiam Essentials 6mm if the mat is for yoga. It is steadier under a standing foot, it smells less, and it costs a little less. Its limits are grip once your hands sweat and cushion in a long kneel.
Get the Essentials Fitness Mat if the floor is the problem: core work, stretching, physio exercises, restorative classes, or knees that ache on anything thinner. It is lighter and comes in more colors, and it will not hold still under one foot. Our Manduka PRO vs Essentials Fitness page covers what a studio mat adds, and Premium vs Essentials 6mm sorts out Gaiam’s other near-twin.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the Gaiam Essentials 6mm and the Gaiam Essentials Fitness Mat?
- Material and thickness. The Essentials 6mm is 6 mm of soft PVC with a textured sticky finish on both faces, 72 by 24 inches and 3.5 pounds, and Gaiam sells it as a yoga mat. The Essentials Fitness Mat is 10 mm of NBR foam with molded ridges, 72 by 23.6 inches and about 2.8 pounds, and Gaiam sells it for ab work, toning and stretching. Both ship with a sling and carry the same lifetime guarantee. The Fitness mat lists $2.85 higher and comes in 11 colors against seven.
- Is the Gaiam Essentials Fitness Mat 10mm good for yoga?
- For floor-based yoga, yes. For standing and balance poses, it is the weaker of the two. Ten millimeters of soft NBR compresses unevenly under one foot, and GearLab recommends 3 to 5 mm for most practice unless you need extra cushion. Amazon's review summary for the Fitness mat runs 227 positive to 365 negative on stability, with owners split on whether it stays put. Its Amazon listing does call it a yoga mat and adds low-impact yoga and Pilates, and for those it works.
- Which Gaiam Essentials mat is better for bad knees?
- The Fitness mat, without much argument. Amazon's review summary counts thickness at 1,112 positive mentions against 171 negative and comfort at 1,017 against 83, and the mat is built to put 10 mm of soft foam between a kneecap and a hard floor. The 6mm is thicker than most studio mats, but its own review summary includes owners saying it is not as thick as expected. If a thin mat hurt your knees, the 6mm will not fix that and the Fitness mat will.
- Why is the Gaiam Essentials 6mm a different length on gaiam.com?
- Because Gaiam sells two mats under that name. The Amazon listing we link is 72 by 24 inches and includes a cinch sling. Gaiam's own site sells an Essentials yoga mat at 68 by 24 inches for $19.98 without a sling. Same foam and same surface, four inches shorter. That is why we link the 6mm on Amazon only. Check the dimensions on whichever listing you buy from if length matters to you.
- Do the Gaiam Essentials mats smell?
- Both do at first, and the thicker one draws far more complaints. Gaiam asks you to unroll the 6mm and air it for two to three days before the first session. For the Fitness mat it calls the NBR low-odor and says any smell fades in 24 to 48 hours, but Amazon's review summary has odor at 111 positive mentions against 355 negative, with some owners calling it an awful smell. The 6mm's odor tally is 32 against 59. Give either mat a few days unrolled near a window, and give the Fitness mat the longer end of that.
- Does the Gaiam lifetime guarantee cover both Essentials mats?
- Gaiam advertises a lifetime guarantee on both, and we could not find the terms published for either. Read it as cover for manufacturing defects rather than for PVC that has packed down or NBR that has torn at an edge, which is how each of these mats usually ends. Gaiam's 30-day return window applies only to unopened, unused orders placed on gaiam.com. Durability is the worst category in the Fitness mat's Amazon review summary, at 285 positive against 661 negative, so expect to replace it rather than claim on it.
