Manduka PRO Long & Wide vs eKO Superlite Long: Which One Should You Buy?

Manduka built these for the same complaint, a body that hangs off a standard 71 inch mat, and then answered it in two completely different places. The PRO Long & Wide answers it at home: 79″ × 52″, 6 mm of dense PVC, 22 pounds, $288, guaranteed for life. The eKO Superlite Long answers it on the road: 79″ × 24″, 1.5 mm of natural rubber, 2.5 pounds, $58, folded into a suitcase.

Tall practitioners often end up with both of these open in browser tabs, which usually means they are shopping for two things at once. Sorting out which one you actually need takes about a paragraph, so here it is: if this is the mat you will practice on at home, the Superlite Long is not a candidate. If it goes in a bag, the Long & Wide never was.

At 1.5 mm the Superlite Long puts almost nothing between you and the ground. OutdoorGearLab’s testers liked the traction of ultra-thin travel mats and still concluded they give no protection to your bones, and would not recommend one as anybody’s only mat. On carpet, grass, or laid over a studio’s rental mat it feels good, because the floor underneath is doing the padding. On tile or hardwood, a low lunge is hard on your knees.

The Long & Wide is 22 pounds and rolls up nearer to an area rug than to gear. No bag or strap is made for it, and it wants a clear rectangle of about 6 feet 7 inches by 4 feet 4 inches on your floor, indefinitely. That is not a knock on the mat. It is just what a dedicated home surface requires.

Both mats are 79 inches long, which fits practitioners past six foot three. The difference is width: 24 inches on the Superlite Long, 52 on the PRO. That is more than double, and it is the reason the Long & Wide exists. On 52 inches you can spread out sideways, work with props beside you, and roll from hip to hip without steering.

Twenty-four inches, by contrast, is slightly narrower than standard. It is fine for a class and a little tight for wide-legged standing poses, but on a mat you chose for packing size, that is a reasonable trade.

Space is the other half of the width question. The Long & Wide needs roughly 6 feet 7 inches by 4 feet 4 inches of clear floor and, at 22 pounds, it is not something you tidy away between sessions. Plenty of people who would love 52 inches simply do not have a room that can spare it, and that rules out the mat far more often than the price does.

The Superlite Long grips from the first practice. It uses the same textured natural rubber as every other eKO, and there is nothing to break in. Its weakness is stability: with only 2.5 pounds holding it down, it can shift or wrinkle on a smooth floor during fast transitions, which GearLab noted on slick surfaces. Over carpet or another mat it stays put, and that is how most owners use it anyway.

The Long & Wide starts slick, as all PRO mats do, and takes a few weeks of practice to develop its grip. Manduka has retired the salt-scrub advice it used to give and now says the surface comes good with use. Once it does, it grips for years, and 22 pounds of mat is not going anywhere. Both are closed-cell, so sweat sits on top of either and a hot class wants a towel.

Manduka’s lifetime guarantee covers the PRO Long & Wide, which in the fine print means roughly ten years of regular use, one replacement, performance-affecting wear only, and proof of purchase from an authorized seller. GearLab’s testers have run into instructors’ PRO mats still in service after five to twenty years, which is the sort of thing dense PVC allows.

The Superlite Long gets 30 day returns. A single dense sheet of rubber lasts better than the thickness implies, since there is no foam to compress, and traveling owners get years out of them. Sun degrades rubber, though, and rough floors abrade it. Manduka also calls the eKO line 99% latex free, which is not latex free, so anyone with a latex allergy should skip it.

A lot of Superlite owners do not use theirs on holiday at all. They use it on top of the mat the studio lends out, which solves a hygiene problem that nobody likes discussing and adds a familiar grip surface at the same time. At 2.5 pounds it is easy to bring along for that alone, and the thinness that hurts it on a bare floor is irrelevant when there is a rental mat underneath.

Care is the usual rubber routine: keep it out of direct sunlight, wipe it with mild soap rather than a vinegar or essential oil mixture, and let it dry before it goes back in the bag. The Long & Wide needs none of that. It gets an occasional wipe, it does not mind a hot room or a clumsy cleaner, and it never has to be packed away, which is one of the quiet advantages of a mat that simply lives on your floor.

The Superlite Long is harder to find than its standard-size sibling. At last check it had no Amazon listing at all and sold through manduka.com, in three colors: Charcoal, Midnight, or Leaf Green. The 71″ Superlite is widely stocked and comes in around nineteen colorways, and it costs $4 less, which makes the long cut one of the cheapest length upgrades in yoga if you are tall.

These prices are not really in competition. Spending $58 to have a long mat wherever you travel is a small, useful purchase. Spending $288 to have 52 inches of durable floor at home is a large, useful one. The only bad outcome is buying the cheap one as a substitute for the expensive one, because a travel mat cannot carry a daily practice on a hard floor.

Buy the PRO Long & Wide if this is your everyday mat and you have the room for it. Tall body, hard floor, space to sprawl, a decade of use: that is the mat, and the guarantee is real.
