Jade Harmony XW vs Manduka Begin: Which One Should You Buy?

The Begin is Manduka’s entry mat: 5 mm of soft TPE, reversible, with a centre alignment stripe, at $62 and 2.5 pounds. It is aimed squarely at someone who has just signed up for classes.

The Harmony XW is the largest mat Jade makes, 80″ × 28″ of open-cell natural rubber from a USA factory, at $149.95. It is what people buy once they know how they practice and what annoys them about the mat they have.

Both mats grip from the first unroll, so the difference does not show up on day one. It shows up twenty minutes into a warm class. The Harmony is open-cell, so moisture goes into the rubber rather than sitting on top of it, and traction holds as your palms get damp.

The Begin is closed-cell TPE. Sweat has nowhere to go, beads on the surface, and your hands start to slide. In a cool room doing gentle work you may never reach that point. If you do, no amount of cleaning fixes it, and a towel becomes part of your kit.

The Begin has a centre line running the length of the mat, so you can see whether your feet, hands and hips are square without a mirror or a teacher watching. When you are learning the shapes that is genuinely useful, and it is part of the surface rather than a print that rubs off.

The Harmony is a plain mat, which is what most experienced practitioners prefer. If alignment guides are the thing you want and you also want serious grip, the Liforme with its etched grid is the mat that does both, at a higher price than either of these.

The Begin is 68″ × 24″, which is the small end of standard. Sixty-eight inches runs out if you are near six feet, since a full-length pose leaves either your head or your heels on the floor.

The Harmony XW is 80″ × 28″. That is a lot of extra mat, and the width is the part people notice first: 28 inches means your hand lands on rubber in a wide stance rather than on the floorboards. If you want Jade without the size, the 68″ Harmony is $99.95.

The Begin is 5 mm of soft TPE and the Harmony is 4.8 mm of dense rubber, so the Begin is kinder on knees and elbows. For a beginner that is not a trivial advantage; a lot of early practice happens on the floor while you build the strength that makes a firm mat comfortable.

The trade is stability. Softer material compresses more under a single foot, so balances feel a touch less settled on the Begin than on the Jade. Neither of these is a plush mat, and if cushioning is your main concern a 6 mm foam mat beats both.

The Begin is 2.5 pounds, which is close to the lightest a full-thickness mat gets. You can carry one on a bike without thinking about it.

The Harmony XW is 6.7 pounds and a wide, bulky roll. It is fine for a walk to the studio and it is not a mat you commute with daily. If you want Jade rubber in something lighter, the Level One is about 4 pounds at $66.50.

Soft TPE takes compression set. Over a year or two of regular practice the Begin gradually develops dents where you kneel and loses some of its bounce. Manduka gives it 30 day returns and nothing after, because the lifetime guarantee is reserved for the PRO line.

The Harmony wears far more slowly, and what kills it is sunlight rather than use, which is why Jade’s one-year warranty excludes sun damage and harsh cleaners. Kept in the shade and wiped down, it gives you years. Absorbed sweat does mean cleaning it more often than a closed-cell mat.

$149.95 against $62. Check the current Begin price, where some Manduka colorways drop well below list, and the Harmony XW, which moves less because there is only one colorway.

Starting on the Begin and moving up later is a perfectly good plan and costs you very little. Starting on the Harmony XW makes sense if you already know you are tall, you already know you sweat, or you have been borrowing studio mats long enough to know what you want.

Get the Begin if you are new to this. It is soft, light, latex free, available in ten colorways, and the alignment stripe earns its place while you are learning. At $62 it is cheap enough that outgrowing it in two years is a fine outcome.

Get the Harmony XW if grip is already your problem or 68 by 24 inches has already stopped fitting you. It is more than twice the price and it solves both of those permanently, provided you can live with one color, 6.7 pounds, and a mat that contains latex.
